Instead of Filling Time, Consciously Wait (365 Days of Spirited Living — DAY 346)

“Patience is not passive waiting. Patience is active acceptance of the process required to attain your goals and dreams.”
— Ray A. Davis

We live in a society in which almost everyone is waiting for something to happen, waiting for something to end, waiting for someone to leave or waiting for someone to show up and make up the difference. The waiting experience is often frustrating and if our goal were to learn patience, which it rarely is, the waiting period does a good job of helping us get there. Our inability to wait stems largely from the fact that we are innately restless and seek to fill time instead of allowing ourselves to become aware of new ideas and possibilities that often only reveal themselves while we are in between current and future status. In the Waiting Room (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 331)

Hebrews 6:15 (NLT)
Then Abraham waited patiently, and he received what God had promised.

When family and friends gather at the hospital for the birth of a child, what is the scariest part? The exciting part is that a new bundle of joy is on the way. But the scary part is waiting, in the waiting room, expectantly hopeful and shaking with nerves. And a large part of being a child of God is exactly like that — standing, sitting, on our knees waiting hopefully, and sometimes not as patiently as we should. Read more…

6 Ways We Fail at Progress (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 269)

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”
— Buckminster Fuller

Everyone moves; very few make progress. Progress is not achieved by happenstance or osmosis or luck. It takes intentional, willful, purposeful work on your own mind and heart and soul every single day. Most people give up because the journey to achieving the progress they want looks so far away. All progress, however, is based on a deeply innate and universal desire to be and live beyond our comfort zones. If we channel it so, every mistake and every success is progress. Read more…

Hopeful Expectations (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 262)

Psalm 130:5 (NLT)
I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on him. I have put my hope in his word.

Isn’t it interesting how we tend to count on people more than God? We put faith in careers, relationships, activities, security, and even travel and have a good deal of expectation that people will do what they say, that we’ll arrive halfway around the world safe and sound, that we will be loved, and that our jobs are stable, and that our families are safe in the communities we live in. You Aren’t the Answer to Your Own Prayers (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 261)

Psalm 37:7a (NLT)
Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act.

What do we tend to do most when we’re waiting? We grumble, complain, and murmur about how long the line is, why there is so much traffic on a Monday, how disorganized management is, or how much time it is taking to get our order ready. We don’t really mind waiting so long as we can complain about the waiting period. Read more…

We Wait While God Works (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 252)

Micah 7:7 (NLT)
As for me, I look to the Lord for help. I wait confidently for God to save me, and my God will certainly hear me.

In our society, many of us have a serious problem with waiting. It’s human nature to crave immediate gratification. But the Bible tells us repeatedly that waiting is a stage of life that all believers must go through. God uses this period of waiting to teach us to be patient and to trust Him fully. It is in our imperfect waiting that God proves his power and strengthens us to practice patience. Read more…
