Guest Post by Sue C. Smith: 6 Ways to Avoid Comparing Yourself to Others (Vita. Consilio. 05.28.17)

We are wired to compare. We compare every day. Will this pair of shoes match my outfit today or go with my outfit tomorrow? Which is the better phone? Will I get to work faster if I take the car or the train? Which restaurant offers the best tasting steak? All these questions involve comparison. Read more…

Peace that Restores the Soul (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 364)

peace-that-restores-the-soul

Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

Many people cannot point to a time when their lives are un-rushed, un-hurried, and un-ragged. Multiple studies point to the fact that we are living in one of the most overworked and overwhelmed generations. We rush to work, to school, to church, back home, to the sporting event, to the play, to the store, to the bank, to the salon, to the doctor, to the beach. And at the end of the day, we are no better off than when we started. Read more…

Our Thoughts Determine How We Live (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 349)

Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

Our lives are largely shaped by the thoughts that flow from our minds and the inner workings that come from our hearts. You cannot become all that you were made to be until you understand the power your thoughts and conscience have in your life. God made us the way we are and gave us the challenge to guard our minds and hearts so that it rejects the evil that tries to infiltrate it and embrace the good that tries to enter. Read more…

Just Thinking (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 338)

just-thinking

Philippians 4:8 (NLT)
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

In life, we are always involved in a battle. Sometimes, it is a physical one — a real war between good people and bad people. Other times, it is an emotional battle, a spiritual battle, a mental battle. We have to fight to control ourselves, against our vices, our impulses, and our worst selves. We are engaged in a battle to discipline our behaviors, to focus on things that matter, and to think about positive and good things. In a way, we have to fight to be better, to do good, and to think positively because it’s always easier to do the opposite. Read more…

“Criticism, like rain, should be gentle enough to nourish a man’s growth without destroying his roots.”
— Frank A. Clark

Our thoughts have the power to control our lives. The more we think, the more we act. Sometimes, our thoughts are good and they propel us to do good. Other times, our thoughts are the exact opposite of who we are at our core and we act accordingly. Changing the way we think can change the way we live and make all the difference in our future. Here are 6 things we waste time thinking about and what we can do about it: Read more…

“You can, you should, and if you’re brave enough to start, you will.”
— Stephen King

What is the one thing that most productive people have in common?

Some would say that it is one’s talent, skill or ability. Others would tend to lean more towards knowledge, intelligence or wisdom. Still, other people may point to family background, environment, tact, wit, ambition, charisma, or a wide range of opportunities and possibilities. Read more…

Reversing Negative Chatter (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 181)

Reversing Negative Chatter

“What you’re believing in the moment creates your suffering or your happiness.”
— Byron Katie

Everything that is bad can always be changed by reversing the thought, attitude, or behavior through choice. In your effort to achieve your goals, you will come up against a lot of negative chatter. Sometimes this will come from other people and other times it will come from within yourself. You cannot control what other people say or think. But we can control what we choose to think and say about ourselves.  Read more…
