We All Face Challenges but Some of Us Are Finding Our Fire: A Message on Perseverance (Soul. Musings. 02/07/17)

Irish poet and novelist Oscar Wilde so accurately said some time ago, “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”

Everyone you meet, whether they admit it or not, is fighting a very difficult battle, striving to overcome a challenge, problem, or hardship. While some of us choose to settle into the struggle and allow it to control us, others of us choose to dig in, deeper and deeper. Read more…

There is a misunderstanding that we will overcome all our struggles. That will not happen as long as we live for struggle is part of life. Being victorious in the struggle is very possible. And that begins with an acknowledgment that we are struggling, embracing the experience, and having the courage to face what we ultimately want to defeat.

“We only have what we give.”
— Isabel Allende

Tragedy has a way of playing both sides of the same coin. On one side, it causes us to feel infinite grief, unbearable heartache, and crushing pain. But on the other side, it forces us to do something about what we are feeling. It weakens us and gives us strength at the same time. This is why we find beauty rising from ashes and new purpose coming forth out of pain. Everyone has a story of some kind that forms the foundation for what they do in life. Read more…

Jesus Just Like Us (365 Days of Daring Faith – DAY 164)

Jesus Just Like Us

John 1:14 (NLT)
So the Word became human and made his home among us.

When we think about Jesus, what are some of the first things that cross our minds? Maybe we think about Christmas and the baby in the manger. Perhaps some of us think about His death, burial, and resurrection. Or do we reflect on His goodness, grace, love, and mercy. Maybe the reality of His power is made evident in our lives. Read more…

The Battle of Waiting (365 Days of Daring Faith – DAY 61)

The Battle of Waiting

Romans 5:3 (NLT)
We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance.

One of the greatest battles we will ever fight is learning to develop patience. We don’t like to wait. We want everything now. We strive to make everything go our way. This is the way most of us live our lives — fighting to get situations to turn out in our favor and to get people to do what we want them to do. It’s an intense struggle, and one that most of us rarely win. Read more…

Give Up Your Burdens (365 Days of Daring Faith – DAY 58)

Give Up Your Burdens

Psalm 55:22 (NLT)
Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.

From almost the day we were born, our lives are filled with trouble. We have burdens, and many of them are too big for us to bear. If you don’t have any problems in life, I assure you that you do not live in reality. The problem with our burdens is that we weren’t made to carry them, yet we attempt to live with these huge weights upon our souls and minds. Read more…
