There are times in all of our lives when we will feel as though we won’t make it through. The upcoming major test. The impending divorce. The two weeks notice on your house. The pink slip on your desk. The red tag on your door. The cancer diagnosis. Each of these moments fills us with anxiety, frustration, and even anger. That’s it’s all not happening like we think it should. That it’s been a waste of time. That it’s unfair. Read more…

Every difficulty has a lesson embedded in it. It isn’t always that we’ve made a mistake or done something wrong. Sometimes, it’s because we’re on the right path and headed in the right direction but we need to endure a test of strength to see what we’re really made of. Reaching that obstacle places us at a point of decision. And it is the decisions that we make in the valley of difficulty that tend to teach us the most important lessons.

“The oak fought the wind and was broken, the willow bent when it must and survived.”
— Robert Jordan

We tend to talk about resilience as a trait that people are born with but that notion couldn’t be further from the truth. We aren’t born being resilient; we learn to be resilient over time. Human beings have an amazing ability to be strong even in the midst of harrowing and discouraging situations. The will to survive is far more flexible than we imagine at first glance. Read more…

4 Harsh Truths that Will Make You Stronger (365 Days of Spirited Living — DAY 333)

“You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
— Marcus Aurelius

If we could get away with it and still maintain our sanity, most of us would be content to live in a fantasy world. Why not? There would be no problems. We get to live in a castle. We eat perfectly cooked food. Servants wait on us hand and foot. We ride on white horses and kiss princes and princesses. Good deal, right? It’ll probably feel good for about a week, maybe a month, but after a while, we’ll grow tired of that life. Read more…

We Expected to Die (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 324)

we-expected-to-die

2 Corinthians 1:8-9 (NLT)
We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.

In our fast-paced world and often harried lives, it is so easy to focus only on the mountains we’re facing or allow ourselves to be blinded by our problems to the point where we feel like we can’t go on or even function in day to day tasks. The real obstacle that is standing in our way most of the time is that we try to do too much in our own strength. Read more…
