Selfless Desires (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 362)

selfless-desires

Galatians 6:8 (NLT)
Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit.

A common question among social psychologists is whether people are naturally inclined to be more altruistic or to be more selfish. While some evidence points to humans being innately generous and willing to help, other studies state that we have the natural tendency to be greedy and self-focused. Some of this is influenced by our environment while some of it is impacted by genetics. Read more…

Having the Best Interests of Others at Heart (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 339)

Philippians 2:4 (NLT)
Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.

Many people in the world often complain about how unhappy they are with their lives. When I hear people talk about finding happiness, I often think that what you are looking for is never so close as the person right next to you — a child, a friend, a co-worker, a parent, a neighbor, a spouse. The beginning of all happiness is not found within ourselves, what we can gain for ourselves, or how we can improve our own lives. It is found in what we can give of ourselves. If all you think about is yourself, you’re going to be quite miserable. Read more…

(30 Things To Stop Spending Time On If You Want to Be Successful #27)

“We all of us need to be toppled off the throne of self, my dear. Perched up there the tears of others are never upon our own cheek.”
— Elizabeth Goudge

The world is a circle and it revolves around me. This is the sad philosophy of many people in our society. We each sit on our little man-made thrones of self and dare anyone to knock us down. It is so characteristic of human nature and human inclinations. But much of what we do, if we were to really look at it and be honest, is in the best interest of us to the neglect of everyone else. Share the Struggle (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 255)

share-the-struggle

“We only have what we give.”
— Isabel Allende

Tragedy has a way of playing both sides of the same coin. On one side, it causes us to feel infinite grief, unbearable heartache, and crushing pain. But on the other side, it forces us to do something about what we are feeling. It weakens us and gives us strength at the same time. This is why we find beauty rising from ashes and new purpose coming forth out of pain. Everyone has a story of some kind that forms the foundation for what they do in life. Read more…

Selfless Sacrifice (365 Days of Daring Faith – DAY 81)

Selfless Sacrifice

1 John 2:2 (NLT)
He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.

What if Jesus came into the world and lived only for Himself? Then what if He decided death was too harsh a path to take so He just skipped Gethsemane and went straight back to Heaven? Besides that, what if He just forgot about us altogether once He arrived in Heaven and He didn’t watch over us or answer our prayers? We would be left thinking how selfish.  Read more…
