We take risks with the expectancy that we will achieve a certain result. The odds are always equal parts negative and positive. There is no such thing as a safe risk. To risk anything is at its very core not to know what is going to happen. For many of us, the unknown is a very scary but unavoidable proposition. If we fail to go forward, we may never know what the outcome could be. If we know too much, we may never follow the path we were meant to take. There can be no growth, no progress, no achievement without risk.

Surf the Waves, Don’t Let the Waves Carry You (365 Days of Spirited Living — DAY 366)

surf-the-waves-dont-let-the-waves-carry-you

“The only thing a person can ever really do is keep moving forward. Take that big leap forward without hesitation, without once looking back. Simply forget the past and forge toward the future.”
— Alyson Noel

In many respects, it is the habits we form that make us or break us. Success or failure fully depends on what we choose to do or not do in order to move forward. Success is subjectively determined, but it is not a matter of following a formula or heeding to a set routine.

The choices we make determine what kind of life we live. You can be a surfer and ride the waves on your own volition and take yourself where you want to go. Or you can let the waves carry you wherever they want and that’s usually going to be somewhere you wouldn’t go yourself. Read more…

6 Real Ways We Fail at Progress (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 273)

6-real-ways-we-fail-at-progress

“Arriving at one point is the starting point to another.”
— John Dewey

Don’t let life discourage you. It will disappoint you at times, but don’t let it get it down. It has been said that every single person who is where they are right now had to begin where they were at some point in the not too distant past. The thing about progress is that it is always moving you further away from where you were and closer to where you want to people. If you allow yourself to get discouraged, you will begin to think motion alone is progress. Sitting and throwing your hands up is motion but it doesn’t get you any closer to your goal. Even if you fall down flat on your face, if you get back up, you’re still moving forward. The point is to get down the right path and keep moving down the right path and eventually, over time, you’ll make progress. Read more…

7 Ways You’re Holding Yourself Back (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 243)

7 Ways You’re Holding Yourself Back

“Stop holding yourself back. If you aren’t happy, make a change.”
— Unknown

At one point or another in our lives, we all hit bumps in the road. These bumps cause our progress to stop temporarily, dry up our creativity, turn a positive attitude soar, and halt our motivation to be productive. As it turns out, it is at these times in our lives that we discover that the only thing keeping us stuck is not the bumps in the road, but ourselves. We don’t realize that we are our own roadblock, keeping ourselves from getting to where we want to go. Read more…

Take the Plunge (365 Days of Daring Faith – DAY 195)

Take the Plunge

Acts 4:29 (NLT)
And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word.

The chances we choose to take in life are often determined by the people we choose to listen to. In the game of life, we want to aim for the highest goal or dream. And so we place our bets on what is going on at that time, anything that will give us an advantage. We put circumstances in the driver’s seat and we hold our finger to the wind to determine direction.  Read more…

The Odds Are Better Than They Look (365 Days of Daring Faith – DAY 183)

The Odds Are Better Than They Look

Numbers 13:25-26 (NLT)
After exploring the land for forty days, the men returned to Moses, Aaron, and the whole community of Israel at Kadesh in the wilderness of Paran. They reported to the whole community what they had seen and showed them the fruit they had taken from the land.

What does it mean to gamble? Gambling is nothing more than a game of chance. It means to take a risk. And billions of dollars are lost every single year because many people are obviously not afraid to gamble on money. Some people even gamble on other people’s lives. Gambling — taking a risk with one’s financials — is a past time, even a daily game for some. Life itself is risky business. Read more…

Throw the Dice (365 Days of Daring Faith – DAY 182)

Throw the Dice

Exodus 12:50-51 (NLT)
So all the people of Israel followed all the Lord’s commands to Moses and Aaron. On that very day the Lord brought the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt like an army.

While we don’t want to admit it, life is full of risks. Everyday, even in the simplest things, we don’t know what is going to happen. And when we don’t how or what is going to happen next but move forward anyway, we are taking a risk. Playing sports, driving to work, even walking out of the house to check the mailbox or take out the trash involves some level of risk. Read more…
