Sometimes To Make Progress, You Have To Go Back (365 Days of Spirited Living — DAY 359)

sometimes-to-make-progress-you-have-to-go-back

“Failure is instructive. The person who really thinks learns quite as much from his failures as from his successes.”
— John Dewey

When each year begins to wind down, most of us make special efforts to make plans for the future. We create resolutions. Put up new calendars in our office or home. Begin a new journal or planner. Write out our long term goals and chart a path to get there. Answer the question, “Where do you see yourself at the end of the year?” is a tool that allows us to gain clarification. Read more…

5 Ways We Unconsciously Destroy Ourselves (365 Days of Spirited Living — DAY 335)

5-ways-we-unconsciously-destroy-ourselves

“Sometimes you hit a point where you either change or self destruct.”
— Sam Stevens

There is a thing commonly called self-sabotage and it is very real even in some of our own lives. We don’t necessarily set out to destroy ourselves. However, the little things we know we shouldn’t do if we really thought about them, but that we do anyway intentionally or unconsciously, on a fairly consistent basis, are what help to destroy our psyche and eventually our lives.

(30 Things To Stop Spending Time On If You Want to Be Successful #22)

“Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.”
— Alan Lakein

There is value in a good plan. The people who succeed the most are those who understand how to think, develop, and work a good solid plan that is effective not just for today, but for days, months, and years to come. This does not mean they don’t take time to have fun and be spontaneous, but serious pursuits deserve a plan. Read more…

8 Habits of the Highly Motivated (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 245)

8 Habits of the Highly Motivated

“Opportunities don’t happen, you create them.”
— Chris Grosser

Motivation is available to all of us. It is the key that opens the door to the morning and the bolt of that same door at night. Without motivation, nothing would ever get done. We would wander, doing only what keeps us interested at any given time before we move on to something else. Without motivation, we would die of boredom.

There are some people who are motivated, but there are others who are driven by their motivation. Motivation not only gets them up, it leaves them too excited to go to sleep. Highly motivated people are truly ahead of the pack, they seize the day differently, and this is what sets them apart from all the rest. Read more…

Drop the To-Do List and Schedule It (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 195)

Drop the To-Do List and Schedule It

“There cannot be a crisis next week. My schedule is already full.”
— Henry Kissinger

Why do the most successful and productive people in the world use a schedule (or calendar) as opposed to a to-do list?

Well, according to researcher Kevin Kruse, there are several reasons. One of the main reasons is that to-do lists have a few weakness that keep projects from getting done and goals from being reached.

Personally, it is easier to get a sheet of paper or a blank sheet on your word processor and make a numbered list of everything you have to do. But a list is all that it is. And a list with no action points is useless.  Read more…

3 Choice Signs You’re Moving Forward (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 129)

3 Choice Signs You’re Moving Forward

“In a moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing to do, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.”
— Theodore Roosevelt

Deliberation can be both a curse and a blessing. To make progress, one must take time to pray, think, and plan. But the time to do that is always limited. The other half of making progress is taking action. Nothing is more common than action not backed by careful thinking and planning. A plan without action is worthless. Action without a plan is a disaster. Read more…
