Faith, at its essence, must be tested. If it is not tested, it cannot be called faith because it will be unknown what it can stand against. This means that at times, we must be broken. We must know what it is like to wrestle and battle with external and internal forces. We must understand what it means to experience pain, suffering, and heartbreak. These experiences, that if we had the power to do so, we would simply bypass in life, are meant to build our faith.

Stop Being Judgmental — A Word on Heart Opening (People. Matter. 01.17.17)

PM011717

Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of my all-time favorite theologians. If you’re not all into religion, though, he’s still one of the best writers on theological subjects and life in general. It turns out that he had something profound to say about being judgmental too… Read more…

We Shouldn’t Be Applauded for Hurting with Those Who Hurt…That’s Our Human Duty (365 Days of Spirited Living — DAY 353)

“It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life, that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

It is truly heartbreaking to see so many suffering people in the world. While I know that no one person can save everybody, I do think that we are all responsible for at least making the effort to alleviate some of the burdens that other people face. No two burdens are the same because no two people actually carry them or face them in the same why. That’s why we need uniquely collective empathy and compassion. Read more…

Rock the Bottom When You Fall (365 Days of Spirited Living — DAY 317)

“Every problem has a gift for you in its hands.”
— Richard Bach

Every once in a while, we will find ourselves at the bottom. At the bottom of our careers. At the bottom of our education. At the bottom of our hopes. At the bottom of our experiences. At the bottom of our lives. In any situation, being at the bottom is never a good feeling, but it could be one of the best things we ever go through. Read more…

When we hit rock bottom, we need to sit there for a while and allow ourselves to feel the pain instead of looking for instant relief.

Finding Meaning in the Midst of Pain (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 285)

1 Peter 4:19 (NLT)
So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.

When Jewish psychiatrist Viktor Frankl was arrested by the Nazis and taken to a concentration camp during World War II, almost everything was taken away from him. He was stripped of his family, possessions, property, and when he arrived at Auschwitz even his manuscript for “Man’s Search for Meaning” was taken away from him. When Frankl emerged from that harrowing ordeal, he reflected, “There is nothing in the world that would so effectively help one to survive even the worst conditions, as the knowledge that there is a meaning in one’s life.” Read more…

Unforgiveness Only Hurts You (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 283)

Matthew 6:14-15 (NLT)
If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Forgiveness is a choice. It is also a product of reaping and sowing. If you don’t learn to forgive other people who offend you even as Christ has forgiven you, you can’t expect the forgiveness of other people. Forgiveness can be likened to a currency exchange. You give some of what you have to get some of what they have. It’s a two-way street. When we give it, we’ll receive it when we need it. Read more…
