SELF-EFFACING (Live. Pray. Hustle. 02/07/17)

SELF-EFFACING (Live. Pray. Hustle. 02/07/17)

A good purpose is not self-serving, it is self-effacing. You want what you do in life to matter, to count for something that is worthy and significant. We aim to achieve so someone other than ourselves derives some good from it. No sensible creator goes through great pains to do something merely for himself, rather, for others, even if it is just one soul who benefits.

Selfless Desires (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 362)

Galatians 6:8 (NLT)
Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit.

A common question among social psychologists is whether people are naturally inclined to be more altruistic or to be more selfish. While some evidence points to humans being innately generous and willing to help, other studies state that we have the natural tendency to be greedy and self-focused. Some of this is influenced by our environment while some of it is impacted by genetics. Read more…

Stop Being Self-Focused (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 295)

(30 Things To Stop Spending Time On If You Want to Be Successful #27)

“We all of us need to be toppled off the throne of self, my dear. Perched up there the tears of others are never upon our own cheek.”
— Elizabeth Goudge

The world is a circle and it revolves around me. This is the sad philosophy of many people in our society. We each sit on our little man-made thrones of self and dare anyone to knock us down. It is so characteristic of human nature and human inclinations. But much of what we do, if we were to really look at it and be honest, is in the best interest of us to the neglect of everyone else. 3 Total Signs You’re Moving Forward (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 123)

3 Total Signs You’re Moving Forward

“There are two kinds of people in the world – those who walk into a room and say ‘Here I am’ and those who say ‘There you are’.”
— Abigail Van Buren

Have you ever run into someone you hadn’t seen in a long time and realized what a contrast there is between you? We are around ourselves every day, every minute of the day that many times, we can’t see how far along we have come. Sometimes it takes being around someone you used to hang with to see that you really have changed a lot. There is a big difference between you and the other person. So don’t give up on your journey. Little by little, you are making progress.  Read more…

Connect to Something More (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 63)

Connect to Something More

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

Selfishness is a rampant epidemic. More often than not, people are focused on themselves, what they can get, how they can win, where they can go, and so on. But when we get down to the very essence of what life really means, we will find that it has nothing at all to do with us. A life lived just for one’s self and one’s own aspirations is a rather earthy and uninspiring life. Read more…

3 Additional Ways We Complicate Life (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 36)

3 Additional Ways We Complicate Life

“The forgiving state of mind is a magnetic power for attracting good.”
— Catherine Ponder

There is really no limit to how complicated life can get some times. One thing seems to lead to another thing until something else pops up. There we are again — busy, frustrated, and worried. In reality though, life itself isn’t complicated. People are complicated. We are complicated. We find ourselves less in control the more we try to be in control because we were never meant to handle so many complications. In our minds, we think we can do all these things, but in our hearts we know we can’t. The more complicated we are in our minds, the more complicated life gets for us. While we seek to lessen our physical load, we must also aim to lessen our mental load. An uncomplicated mind makes for a very peaceful life.

Do You Have a Dream? (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 18)

Do You Have a Dream

“I have a dream.”
— Martin Luther King Jr.

Our efforts to make things better in the world, and our hope that they even can be better is at the heart of who we are as individuals and as part of the global community. Our dreams shape us and help us to commit to and connect with each other in unimaginable ways. The wisdom and knowledge we collectively have improve and enhance each others’ lives.
