Nothing Exciting Happens on Most Days: A Message on Happiness and Meaning (Soul. Musings. 03/26/17)

People have long debated the question of what is happiness? We often use the term “happiness” as a catch-all to describe a range of emotions from excitement to contentment and every positive feeling in between.

Over the last several years, scientists and researchers have done solid work to help us understand what happiness is and how we can cultivate it in our lives. As it turns out, happiness has nothing to do with how much money you have in your bank account or how many clothes you have in your closet. Read more…

Don’t Be Afraid (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 358)

dont-be-afraid

Luke 2:10 (NLT)
But the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people.”

Throughout the Christmas story, four individuals had two things in common with each other. Joseph, Mary, Zechariah and the shepherds all were afraid or troubled and each time an angel came to them and told them not to be afraid. To the shepherds, the angel told them not to be afraid because of the promise of a Savior. To Mary, the angel told her not to be afraid because she was in God’s favor. To Joseph, the angel told him not to be afraid and instead to follow God’s divine plan for the Christ child’s birth. To Zechariah, the angel told him not to be afraid because his prayers for a child had been answered. Read more…

Losing It All While Hanging On (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 333)

Mark 8:35 (NLT)
If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it.

Too many people look for happiness and peace in how much money they make, the house they live in, the car they drive, the relationships they have, the success they obtain. But God has set up the world in such a way that none of these things bring eternal happiness and peace. These things are nice to have, but their effect is extremely temporary. Many people chase things and stuff looking for that one thing that they cannot lose and they never find it because they are looking in all the wrong places. Read more…

Generosity in Exchange for Happiness (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 296)

Acts 20:35b (NLT)
You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

How do you define happiness? Some people define happiness by how much money they have, how big their house is, or the make and model of their car. Other people think of happiness in terms of how many friends they have or their social standing in the community. Still other people determine their level of happiness by the weather, their feelings, or what someone said or didn’t say to them or about them. Read more…

Joy in Divine Will (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 295)

joy-in-divine-will

Psalm 40:8 (NLT)
I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.

God’s greatest desire is to live in and fill up the hearts of all people in the earth. That means he wants his commands to be front and center in our lives. God wants a handle on our hearts, access to our souls because when he does he is better able to guide us in the direction he wants us to go. He takes pleasure in our lives to the extent that we take pleasure in his will. Read more…

Let Your Joy Out (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 284)

let-your-joy-out

“The gloom of the world is but a shadow; behind it, yet within our reach, is Joy.”
— Fra Giovanni

Life actually boils down to one main question: are you really living it? And I don’t mean in the way that you have a lot of material possessions to show for it. Or that you’re the face of every party and always want the spotlight on you. I’m talking about how well you are fulfilling your purpose, serving others, and making good on the investment you’ve been given. Because life truly is an investment that shouldn’t be gambled on or held back. Read more…
