Instead of complaining about all the evil in the world, we need to start working on all the good that is left to do.

How Complaining Hurts Our Brain and What We Can Do About It (365 Days of Spirited Living — DAY 320)

“Acceptance means no complaining, and happiness means no complaining about the things over which you can do nothing.”
— Wayne Dyer

When things don’t go as we plan, we all have the natural tendency to gripe and complain. For many people, it is a way to let people know how we feel. And for others, it is a way of venting with the expectation of getting a thing or two off of our chest. Really it is a way that contributes to normal functioning at times.

While there are certainly times when we can and should bring up matters of importance or issues that need to be address, complaining unnecessarily in thought, action, or conversation can have immensely negative effects on our brain functioning. Negativity can spread just as quickly and impactfully as positivity can. And it affects our brains more than we think. Read more…

At Rock Bottom? Remember 3 Things (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 265)

“The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.”
— Moliere

I wish I could tell you that everybody who hits rock bottom survives. But you have been around too long and probably seen too much to believe that. Many people don’t make it ever up out of the pit because they feel all is hopeless and lost. But some people do. They find themselves in a situation that is unpleasant or uncomfortable, and they know deep down inside that this is not the way they were meant to live or how they imagine things should be. So they do things and tell themselves things to start the climb from rock bottom to the top. Read more…

You Are How You Act (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 239)

You Are How You Act

“The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.”
— Karl Marx

Sometimes life pushes you over. Other times it knocks you upside the head and sends you stumbling in a million different directions. But at other times, you knock you completely to the ground and dares you to get up. A good life is not one that consists of no problems. It is one that has learned how to persevere through challenges without complaining. Read more…

3 Other Warning Signs About the Company You Keep (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 235)

3 Other Warning Signs About the Company You Keep

“Stop letting people who do so little for you control so much of your mind, feelings and emotions.”
— Will Smith

Negative thoughts hold the power to ruin us, but equally, do negative people. Sometimes it isn’t our thoughts that kill us, but the negative people we allow to get to us. When we should extract people from our lives, we don’t because we don’t want to hurt their feelings or break up long-standing relationships no matter how draining they are. But if we never make the trek across that bridge, we may never get to where we attempted to go in the first place, and that is how regret develops. Read more…

3 Whole Ways We Sabotage Ourselves (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 171)

3 Whole Ways We Sabotage Ourselves

“Don’t complain; just work harder.”
— Randy Pausch

Pride will trip you up. Whining will make people hate you. Worrying will kill you. Yet we do these things anyway and somehow expect everything we ever wanted to just happen. If you took just an ounce of the energy and effort you put into worrying and complaining and applied it to fixing a problem, you’d be so much happier and achieve so much more. And arrogance too is a strategy of self-sabotage. The effort to be first, on the top, or big makes you last, at the bottom, and small. Read more…

3 Small Signs You’re Moving Forward (365 Days of Spirited Living – DAY 118)

3 Small Signs You’re Moving Forward

“When you focus on problems, you will have more problems. When you focus on possibilities you’ll have more opportunities.”
— Unknown

A sure way to stop progress is to give power to negative energy. When we fill our space with right goals and positive thoughts, everything that is wrong and negative has to move. If the negative is allowed to run rampant, the positive will eventually slip away from us. Learn to play the game of elimination. If something or someone doesn’t add to your life, open the door for it to leave. If it doesn’t leave on its own, kick it out. Break the habit of giving voice to problems and choose to talk about the possibilities. There are so many on the road of progress. Read more…
