We’ve been told that all things happen for a reason but sometimes that is hard to believe especially when you have no clue as to what the reason is and Why? Why? Why? is the question reverberating in our heads. But I’m here to tell you that nothing you experience in life is insignificant. You may not see its meaning in the moment because clarity is hard to come by in the midst of chaos. When things get chaotic, we tend to get caught up in it or start running; it’s the human physiological “fight-or-flight” reaction. But trust me, everything happens for a reason. And when the dust settles and the fog clears, that reason may become more evident. When we focus on the reason more than the experience, we develop character that produces necessary change.

We live our best lives when we own our attitudes, behaviors, and perceptions. Owning our issues makes us captain of our personal team. The ball is in our court; therefore, we get to decide what we do and how we react to what is done. We do not blame anything on our neighborhood, our parents, our environment, our government, or our spiritual leaders. Instead, we own the issues. We work to change what we can. And we do not let what can’t be changed interrupt our lives.

3 Other Ways to Stop Disappointing Yourself with People (365 Days of Spirited Living — DAY 313)

“Expectations were like fine pottery. The harder you held them, the more likely they were to crack.”
— Brandon Sanderson

Holding on to expectations of other people is very different from holding people accountable for their behavior. The former will keep you spinning in circles, have you end up empty-handed, and keep you frustrated and bitter. The latter will keep people off of your mind, frees you to tell the truth, and keeps you from becoming overwhelmed and shortchanged. Read more…

The Greatest Barrier to Change (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 300)

Romans 12:3 (NLT)
Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.

Change is the greatest struggle that we will ever have to endure in life. Even above pain and problems and the daily grind, change is a line that draws itself in the sand and dares us to cross it. The chains that so often prevent us from crossing that line is pride. It’s probably the greatest barrier that we will have to fight through in life. Read more…
