14 Things To Take With You In 2014

At the beginning of 2013, I wrote an article titled “13 Things To Take With You In 2013.” As we celebrate and make new resolutions for a new year, there are some practical things we should keep in our hearts and minds and carry with us throughout 2014. Life is not just about starting well, it’s also about ending well. Most importantly, life is about leading and loving a joy-filled, purposeful journey. Life has a beginning and an end. Everything in between, the choices we make, the attitude we choose to have, determines our success or failure. So often we race through life and forget to live. Let 2014 be the year that you choose to enjoy every day, every aspect, every moment you are allowed to live. No matter how difficult the road gets or how high the climb is to the top of the mountain, determine to not only have life but to have it more abundantly, to live it to the full, and to make every moment count. With that said, I want to add one more thing to this list that we all should take with us into 2014.

14. Take hope with you. Unfortunately, the world is filled with much suffering, hurt, pain, war, terror, violence, and heartbreak. Not a day went by in 2013 that did not bring with it some unsavory situation. But hope is not just an idea or a thought; it is not just a four-letter word plastered on a poster. Hope is a strategy for life. It is a state of being, a state of mind that desires and expects good, positive results in life and in the world. It is careful anticipation with sweet confidence that everything will work out just the way it should. Hope has another definition too. It is a definition that screams for action. Dr. Charles Snyder, one of the early developers of positive psychology gave this definition of hope, “Hope is the sum of the mental willpower and waypower that you have for your goals.” In other words, hope is setting goals that will guide our thoughts and actions to produce positive results for our lives. As you strive toward the goals you set, let hope guide you to know that anything good is possible. So, in 2014, you can have hope and you can share that hope with others. Be the miracle for someone else that you would want someone else to be for you. As long as you have life, you can have hope. Let hope be your constant companion, your faithful friend, the hand you hold, and the foundation of the life you live. God is hope. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” (Romans 15:13).

13 Things to Leave Behind in 2013

At the end of 2012, I wrote an article titled “12 Things To Leave Behind in 2012.” Well, in a few hours, the year of 2013 will be history and 2014 will appear with all the newness and hope that the start of a new year brings. With all its turmoil, suffering, war, and loss, 2013 still offered a glimmer of hope for some and became a source of courage for many others. With that said, I want to add one more thing to this list that we all should leave behind in 2013.

13. Leave the past in the past. Someone said very wisely, that sometimes we often crucify ourselves between two crosses, regret of the past and worry about the future. If you physically leave the past, but you are mentally and emotionally still living in the past, you have already set yourself up for a mediocre present and an almost non-existent future. The point of having a past is not to live there. The point is to learn from the past so you can purposefully live in the present and prepare for a great future. 2013 is behind all of us. It no longer exists. You do not have permission to live in that house. Don’t carry the baggage, the drama, the confusion, the trouble with you. Leave it at the door of 2013. Turn around. Face forward. Enter the new door of 2014. Behind this door lies possibilities, hope, abundance, and a wonderful life worth living. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'” This is what your future looks like — it is bright and overflowing with God-ordained purpose and hope. God has you covered. Trust Him to take you to amazing places you never imagined you would go in 2014. Read more…

12 Things To Leave Behind in 2012

In less than 48 hours, people all around the world will close the chapter on what has been a tumultuous, painful, and devastating year for some, and a joyful, productive, and sober year for others. Like every start of a new year, many people make resolutions to do this or do that, change this or change that. Very rarely, however, do these resolutions stick. The excitement of starting over and second chances quickly dims with the reality and mundanity of everyday life. And the new year quickly becomes just another year like any other.
