You Are Chosen (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 365)
1 Peter 2:9 (NLT)
You are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
Remember when you were a young child in school, you wanted to be accepted by your peer group so you may have been willing to do almost anything to be a part of the in-group. Or maybe you remember trying out for the football team as a teenager and you felt bad when the picks got down to the last two and you still weren’t chosen.
Most people spend their whole lives looking for acceptance and approval from other people. We have an inner desire to be affirmed as it increases our self-esteem and boosts our feelings of worthiness. This desire to be accepted influences what we do, what we say, what we have, and how we act. In short, being approved by others makes us feel special, makes us feel like we are doing something right.
The truth is, even if you were never given the thumbs-up by the people around you, you have already been chosen by God. First Peter 2:9 states, “You are a chosen people.” How’s that for a boost to self-esteem and confidence. Jesus accepts you and approves of you not because you have a great work ethic or because you have done many good deeds. His acceptance isn’t because of something you deserve, it is because he simply wants you to be his.
Accepting Christ into your life is just the beginning. Many people accept Christ but don’t live in the abundance and freedom that he provides simply because they don’t realize they have been accepted into God’s family. Maybe you grew up trying to please your parents or trying to prove that you were worthy of their love and affection. Well, God is not like that. You don’t have to earn God’s approval; you don’t have to prove that you are worthy of his love and affirmation. God accepts you just as you are.
Oftentimes, we keep ourselves on the “not good enough” train. Running around trying to please everybody and be approved by everybody, we end up spending most of our lives never fulfilling the plan and purpose God has designed us to fulfill. The tragedy comes when you don’t understand that you don’t need anyone else’s approval in your life. God has already approved you. First Peter 2:9 continues, “You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession.”
If you haven’t gotten the affirmation you want from your parents by now, leave off from seeking that and take comfort in the fact that God is the greatest father and he has approved you. There are billions of people in the world. If a few friends don’t like you or a boss doesn’t approve of your best performance, that should not matter. You have been accepted by God and because you are part of his family, you have been commissioned to do something. First Peter 2:9 states, “As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.” Now it is your turn to be light in the world and to guide others to receiving God’s acceptance.
“Let those be thy choicest companions who have made Christ their chief companion.”
