To Know Him Deeply (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 342)
Habakkuk 3:2a (NLT)
I have heard all about you, Lord. I am filled with awe by your amazing works.
God doesn’t just want to be Lord of our lives; He wants to be our very best friend. Sometimes, when we think about God or even speak about God, we tend to put Him in a narrow box and place Him far away in the heavens as One who is disconnected and unconcerned about humanity. But God is not like that. He gives us vision and sets dreams in our heart and stands close by ready and willing to help us fulfill it.
There are three types of people in the world: those who know OF God, those who know ABOUT God, and those who KNOW God. People who know of God have simply heard his name at one point or another in their lives. Those who know about God have heard about his nature and his character and his amazing works in the world. But those who know God have experienced his amazing mercy, love, and grace in their lives. They know him on an intimate and personal basis. They worship him and thank him at every opportunity because he is real to them.
God doesn’t just want us to know of him or about him, he wants us to know him. Like any real relationship, to be in connection, you have to be in constant communication; that is the only way to get to know the other person on an intimate, deep level. The way we get to know God is through prayer. And when we pray, we can be assured that God has not only heard, but that he will answer in good and perfect time. Habakkuk said, “I have heard all about you, Lord. I am filled with awe by your amazing works.”
It can be difficult to seek out and maintain real friendships in this world. So many things can get in the way of that — betrayal, past mistreatment, fear, insecurity, heartbreak. But when you have Someone who wants to be your friend no matter who you are, where you’ve been or what you have done, that is an opportunity for you to open up, communicate deeply, and spend time together each day. God wants to be that kind of friend. Talking and listening to God every day, throughout the day on a consistent basis will transform your life in more ways than you can imagine.
Just being in God’s presence is an opportunity to amazed and to be grateful. At every moment in the day, to know that God is there with you, for you, within you, and around you, is reason enough to stand in awe of his amazing power and grace. God wants you more than you want to be desired. And if you let him in, he will give you peace in times of conflict, joy in the midst of pain, and hope that everything is going to be okay because he is in control and you can depend on a God like that.
“It matters little what form of prayer we adopt or how many words we use. What matters is the faith which lays hold on God, knowing that He knows our needs before we even ask Him. That is what gives Christian prayer its boundless confidence and its joyous certainty.”
— Dietrich Bonhoeffer
