The One Thing Productive People Have In Common (365 Days of Spirited Living — DAY 323)

“You can, you should, and if you’re brave enough to start, you will.”
— Stephen King

What is the one thing that most productive people have in common?

Some would say that it is one’s talent, skill or ability. Others would tend to lean more towards knowledge, intelligence or wisdom. Still, other people may point to family background, environment, tact, wit, ambition, charisma, or a wide range of opportunities and possibilities.

But we all can probably think of at least one person we know or one person we don’t really know but have heard of who aren’t particularly talented, who may not have a lot of intelligence, who may not possess any outstanding characteristic such as charisma, and who may not have had the best of upbringings, who have somehow climbed the ladder of success.

Many people can point to some instance or incident in their lives that was the impetus for them to become who they are today. Maybe it was a setback, an obstacle, a disability, a chronic illness, or abandonment by family members and friends that hurt them when it was happening, but ultimately set them up to win in life.

I don’t claim to have lived long enough to think this is the only thing, but I do find one common denominator in all people who are productive and from their productivity experience success. I think that one thing is a positive mindset. To believe that you can do something or that you can be successful at something is of great importance for it to actually happen.

Like anything else, productivity is a matter of the will. If you do not make up your mind to be productive, you are unlikely to be. If you do not believe that good things will come from your labor or that the situations you encounter precede some good happening in your life, it is unlikely that you will use your environment and your experiences in a way that is beneficial.

What you think about ultimately determines who you are. I strongly believe that thoughts inform behavior. Whether we are consciously aware of it or not, we are always thinking. We are always seeking to understand and interpret information about people, things, and ourselves. A positive mindset positively influences productivity. By changing your mindset to be more optimistic, you can effectually change how you get things done.

The kind of thoughts we think and mindset we develop will determine the kind of life we have. It will show us whether we are growing or regressing. It will help us to identify the things we are doing that will lead us to success and the things we need to change or improve. The way we think will either hinder us or challenge us. And it is the challenges that drive us to be productive and eventually successful.

“Instead of worrying about what you cannot control, shift your energy yo what you can create.”
— Roy T. Bennett
