How to Know God Is Good (365 Days of Daring Faith — DAY 287)

Psalm 145:9 (NLT)
The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation.

You know how some people tend to use a lot of salt on their food or sugar in their coffee — yours truly being one of them — we don’t sprinkle it on; we pour it on. God’s goodness is very much like that. He doesn’t just sprinkle his grace and mercy and love into our lives; he pours it on. In fact, he not only pours, he showers.

Every day, in more ways than we can begin to imagine, God pours his love and goodness on the world in loads. He doesn’t approve of everything we do or say, but that doesn’t stop him from being good to us. You can know God is good not only because the Bible tells us so but because if we just stop to think about it, our very existence is a result of his goodness.

You can know how good God is because he loves you unconditionally. He proved his love for us by sending his Son, Jesus Christ, to earth to take on the sins of the whole world. Our sorrows became his sorrows, our problems became his problems, our failures and mistakes all became his. He owned them and bore them so we wouldn’t have to. God showed his goodness by loving you and me.

You can know God how good God is because he is concerned with every part of your life. We tend to think that because God is absolutely perfect and holy that he only cares about spiritual matters. But that’s not true at all. God cares about your health, your family, your career, your blue Mondays, your hump Wednesdays, whether you get into your dream school or get married or have a baby. God cares about all of it. He shows his goodness by paying attention to every detail of our lives — inside and out, good days and bad days.

People doing good things in the world is rarely elevated to the level that people doing bad things are. We tend to focus so much on the negativity and sin around us and even within us that we don’t pay attention to the grace and goodness that exists. God is all around us and within us. If God didn’t love his world, he wouldn’t waste his time being good to it. You can know the goodness of God by opening your life to his love and grace.

“The goodness of God is infinitely more wonderful than we will ever be able to comprehend.”
