Reversing Negative Chatter

Everything that is bad can always be changed by reversing the thought, attitude, or behavior through choice. In your effort to achieve your goals, you will come up against a lot of negative chatter. Sometimes this will come from other people and other times it will come from within yourself. You cannot control what other people say or think. But we can control what we choose to think and say about ourselves. 

There is a big difference between obtaining something and maintaining something. For example, many people feel empowered after attending a seminar or hearing someone talk about overcoming obstacles. But very few people allow that sense of empowerment to stay with them over the course of days, months, and even years. You leave the seminar and think about what you heard for the rest of that day and then the next day comes and you’ve forgotten all about it.

You must understand that the negative opinions of other people are created through their own personal fears and limiting beliefs. Likewise, the negative words and attitudes we allow to come up from within are a result of our own fears and limiting beliefs. Our thoughts often do come on their own. But it is our intentionality to rethink and reprocess every thought that determines whether we stay stagnant or make progress.

For a lot of us, it isn’t the negative chatter from the outside that stops us. It is more of the negative chatter from within that manifests itself as negative words such as “won’t,” “can’t,” “impossible” and so on. The negative chatter turns into negative attitudes as well such as, “This won’t work,” “I always fail,” “Nothing ever works out right” and so on. Sometimes when we think of our goals and the inevitable roadblocks that persist, what we intend to tell ourselves often becomes the exact opposite.

When you notice negative words coming out of your mouth or negative thoughts ruminating in your head, that is the time you need to stop yourself and change what you are saying or thinking. Reverse the negative chatter instead of focusing on it. When you focus on something, you get more of it. If you highlight bad behavior, the bad behavior often continues. If you put more of your attention on negative thoughts, the negative thoughts keep coming.

It is not enough to just say something positive. You must believe what you’re saying. No matter what has happened in the past, you must believe for what you want to happen now or in the future. Many dreams don’t get realized and many goals don’t get reached not because they are too hard but because someone stopped believing. Someone stopped working for what they wanted. Someone left it all in the dust and gave up.

Every new day is a clean, blank slate. It is like a new paint station waiting for someone to produce a picture. Successful people don’t wallow in their past failures. They learn from them and move on. Every day you live is an opportunity for you to change your mindset, reverse negative chatter going on in your head, and refocus your inner camera on your achieving your goals. Those who change their minds often change their lives.
