Appointments of Authority (365 Days of Daring Faith – DAY 173)
Romans 13:1 (NLT)
Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.
Our society has an increasingly difficult time understanding authority. Everything in our lives is part of a system of authority that God has put in place. God is a God of order. Everyone cannot just do what they want to do. God is also a God who embodies authority. He has set in place authority systems in every sphere of life — church, family, school, community, and government.
The people God has appointed to be in authority over us are not there to take away our fun. Instead they are there to protect us. God looks out for all of our best interests. Without authority, anything goes. When we understand the importance of authority, we are more willing to submit to God’s authority and the authority he has established in the world.
When we willingly place ourselves under God’s authority, we find ourselves in a place of peace, protection, and purpose. And when we submit to authority, we sometimes find ourselves in positions of authority. Authority has been placed in our lives so that we can experience all of the good things God has established and created for us.
“Authority exercised with humility, and obedience accepted with delight are the very lines along which our spirits live.”
— C.S. Lewis
