Risky Business (365 Days of Daring Faith – DAY 140)
Luke 14:28 (NLT)
But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it?
Jesus’ call for people to follow Him doesn’t come with many tangible benefits. The kind of benefits that a high profile job offers are not part of the deal. He doesn’t promise a life of ease or a bed of roses. In fact, nothing close to it is anywhere in there. He tells us clearly it will be challenging and even heartbreaking at times.
The walk of faith is risky business. When we begin to truly grow deeper in the ways of God, we must consider whether we’re willing to pay the cost of doing so. The truth is, the Christian life offers long-term benefits that are preceded by great costs. Following Christ may cost us some of our relationships. Or, it may cost us our job, our financial security, our family, and even out time.
But there is great news that comes with this risky business. It is this: the Christian life comes with the best benefits anyone can imagine. What would you give to have unspeakable joy, unconditional love, or incomprehensible forgiveness? What would you be willing to give to have a relationship with God that never grows old? While not easy, the life of the believer far outweighs any cost.
“There’s no greater lifestyle and no greater happiness than that of having a continual conversation with God.”
