3 Explicit Signs You’re Moving Forward

“A little nonsense now and then, is cherished by the wisest men.”
— Roald Dahl

Every little bit of growth is a little bit more progress. Sometimes we grow in spurts, by leaps and bounds. At other times, we grow in plateau mode, centimeter by centimeter. Can you see people walking the streets while flying 30,000 feet in the air? Not really. Plateaued growth is a lot like this. You can’t see it, but it’s there. How does an oak tree become an oak tree? Little by little. You can’t see an oak tree grow, but it does. Every little seed, every little root, every bit of water, every bit of sunshine, every little bit of everything contributes to its growth. And then one day, out of nowhere, the little seed becomes a giant oak tree. You have to keep growing. That’s what you have to do. And that’s how you make progress.

Here are three more signs you’re moving forward in life even if you don’t feel it:

1. When you make time for regular rest and relaxation. It is one thing to be energetic and busy. It is another thing to be tired and busy. You’ve realized that taking time for yourself is essential. Therefore, you make time to rest your mind and body before returning to work. And you don’t just do it for a week every six months, but every week, even every evening. You’ve realized that heading out for a run or a walk, chatting with three friends over coffee, taking your best friend to the movies, listening to music with your eyes closed, or anything else you enjoy doing can really recharge your cognition and elevate your mood.

2. When you are in control. Sure, we can’t be in control of every single situation nor can we be in control of the entire universe, but we can be in control of our minds, our behaviors, our actions, and our words. You’ve learned to not let other people control you and determine how you act and react. When you’re in control, you know where you’re going and how you’re going to get there. Creating your own path and then following it is the best possible freedom and a sure-fire way to keep moving and make progress.

3. When you’ve developed a support group of people you can trust. While we have our own mind and opinions about our path in life, we know that we can’t do it alone. Sometimes we get stumped and we just need help. It’s not that we need help so much as it is who we choose to call for help. In the past, you’ve had to let some people go because they were dishonest and untrustworthy, they held you up and dragged you down, and gave you more heartache than help. That’s a massive step in the right direction. When you let go, you’ve got to replace. So now you have created a support system of friends and family who you can go to, talk to, confide in, laugh with, cry on, and plan together. They love you and like you for who you are, they lovingly correct when needed, and rejoice in your success.
