Gathering Our Messes (365 Days of Daring Faith – DAY 82)

Gathering Our Messes

Psalm 57:3 (NLT)
He will send help from heaven to rescue me…My God will send forth his unfailing love and faithfulness.

Someone once said that coming to God after you’ve cleaned up your life is like going to the emergency room after you stop bleeding. It’s like cleaning up your house and then calling a maid service. We often do these things because we want to feel as though we have done something. We like to think we have put some work in in order to gain certain results. But this is not how God operates.

God doesn’t expect us to clean up our lives or do any amount of good works before we come to Him. He unfailingly loves us in our mess. He remains faithful to us even when we stray from Him and disobey His commandments. When Jesus died on the cross, He spread out His arms in a reflection of His heart. He proved His love for us and said to us just come as you are — messes, failures, chaos and all. The cross is our excuse to gather up all our messes instead of trying to fix them, and turn everything over to God.

You may think God cannot love you. But here’s the truth, God cannot not love you. God wants you to come as you. Bring your messes, sins, and failures to God. God can forgive any event from your past. You must believe that He can because He can. You don’t need to fix anything or re-do anything; you just need to come to Him. He has sent help from Heaven in the form of Jesus. Let Him love you, save you, help you, and make you a new person inside and out.

“Be a sinner and sin boldly, but believe and rejoice in Christ even more boldly.”
— Martin Luther
